The Hon P A Bergin AO SC
The Hon P A Bergin AO SC was formerly a Judge of the Supreme Court of New South Wales serving as such between 1999 and 2009 and as Chief Judge in Equity of the Court and as an additional Judge of Appeal from 2009 to 2017. During her time as a Judge of the NSW Supreme Court her Honour served as the Commercial List Judge for six years administering the work of the busiest Commercial Court in Australia. Ms Bergin graduated in law from Macquarie University in 1981 (B Leg S) and was awarded a Doctor of Laws (LLD) honoris causa by Macquarie University in 2013.
Ms Bergin practised as a solicitor with Stephen Jaques & Stephen (now King & Wood Mallesons) from 1981 until 1984 when called to the New South Wales Bar where she practised for 15 years. She was appointed Senior Counsel (SC) in 1998. During her time at the Bar Ms Bergin served on the NSW Bar Council for 5 years in addition to serving on and chairing the Advisory Committee to the Law School of the Wollongong University and on the Legal Qualifications Committee of the Legal Practitioners Admission Board. Ms Bergin also served as the Chairperson of the NSW Cancer Council for three years and later for a further three years as the founding Chairperson of the NSW Cancer Institute.
Ms Bergin was appointed as an International Judge on the Singapore International Commercial Court (SICC) when it was established in January 2015. Ms Bergin served as an International Judge on the SICC from January 2015 to January 2024.
Since her retirement from the NSW Supreme Court Ms Bergin has conducted two NSW Government Inquiries one with Special Commission powers and the other with Royal Commission powers respectively into the Returned and Services League NSW in 2017-2018 and into the operations of a publicly listed company, Crown Resorts Limited in 2019-2021. The NSW Government adopted the recommendations made in each of the Reports of those Inquiries.
In 2021 Ms Bergin was appointed as an Officer of the Order of Australia (AO) for distinguished service to the law, and to the judiciary, to legal administration, and as a mentor and advisor.
